Volunteer

We are currently seeking volunteer teachers!

Beginning in January and running until April (a college semester) volunteers will use their creativity and intelligence to make our third debate program a success. We rely solely upon the commitment of ordinary people stepping up and volunteering. Don’t worry if you’re new — we give you plenty of support and you will teach in teams, so you’ll always have a partner!
Please email Caroline at info@malcolmxdebates.org if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer!

  • Volunteer training will take place during the month of February
  • If you are a student, you can receive course/internship credit
  • You will be part of an innovative, evolving, volunteer-driven project
  • You will have a unique opportunity to work with incarcerated students
  • You will learn more about yourself as a leader, a teacher, a thinker, an organizer, an activist, and a person! You will not walk away unchanged.

Can’t commit to volunteer right now?

No problem! Show your support for MXD@Rikers by joining our steering committee. Visit the Steering Committee pages for our meeting dates and times! We need help with our continual curriculum development, fund-raising, and all-around program innovation. Come once or come every week…we’d love to have you.

  • I would love to attend trainings and/or take part in the steering committee. I am part of an organization at Columbia University called Youth for Debate that has developed a public speaking curriculum to teach to students who have not been given the opportunity to develop strong public speaking skills – such an essential component of success! Please let me know how I can help or get involved!
